The 5 Freedoms

The 5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare form the cornerstone of everything we do. These internationally recognized standards ensure that every equine in our care receives comprehensive, compassionate treatment.

This is not just policy—this is our promise to every horse that comes through our gates.

Understanding The 5 Freedoms

These principles guide every decision we make, from emergency rescue to long-term rehabilitation.

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst

Every equine deserves access to fresh water and a diet that maintains full health and vigor. We ensure proper nutrition tailored to each horse's individual needs, whether recovering from starvation or maintaining optimal health during rehabilitation.

2. Freedom from Discomfort

Horses require appropriate shelter and comfortable resting areas. Our sanctuary provides safe, weather-appropriate housing with clean bedding, protection from the elements, and sufficient space for each animal to rest and recover.

3. Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease

We provide immediate veterinary assessment and ongoing medical care for every equine. This includes pain management, treatment of injuries, disease prevention through vaccination, and regular health monitoring to ensure rapid intervention when needed.

4. Freedom to Express Natural Behavior

Horses are social, grazing animals that need space to roam and interact. Our facilities provide sufficient area for natural movement, opportunities for socialization with other equines, and environments that allow them to exhibit their natural behaviors.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress

Mental well-being is as critical as physical health. We ensure conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering by providing calm, predictable environments, gentle handling, and trauma-informed care for horses that have experienced abuse or neglect.
